Chapter 8: The Truth Beneath the House
"Ask her why she killed your father.""
The message glowed between my fingers.
I read it once.
Then again.
My mother stood across from me, completely still.
Daniel looked from my phone to her face.
No one spoke.
Finally, I lifted my eyes.
"Did you kill him?""
My mother's lips parted.
"Claire—"
"Did you kill my father?""
She didn't answer.
That silence hurt more than the accusation.
I stepped backward.
"Everyone keeps telling me the truth is complicated.""
My voice shook.
"It's not complicated anymore. Someone killed him.""
Daniel moved closer.
"Claire, let her explain.""
I looked at him.
"You knew she was alive.""
He didn't deny it.
"You knew.""
"Not until tonight.""
"That's not true.""
His face tightened.
"Your father asked me to find her years ago. I thought she was dead.""
My mother looked at him.
"You never knew where to look.""
"Then why did you contact Claire now?"" Daniel asked.
My mother's eyes moved toward me.
"Because they're closing in.""
"Who?""
She crossed the room and locked the back door.
"People who have been waiting for the trust to become vulnerable.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Everyone keeps saying that. What does it actually mean?""
She turned.
"Your father didn't die naturally.""
"I know.""
"He was poisoned.""
"I know that too.""
"Then you also know he was investigating Jonathan Bell.""
"Marcus's father.""
She nodded.
"He discovered Jonathan had been laundering money through the companies.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"And Robert Hale?""
My mother looked at him.
"Robert was involved too.""
"Yet Evelyn killed him.""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
My mother hesitated.
"Because Robert tried to take Ethan.""
My stomach twisted.
"Take him where?""
"Out of the country.""
"Why?""
"Because Jonathan's people wanted the baby.""
I stared at her.
"For what?""
"Leverage.""
She sat down.
"Ethan was born with access to something they couldn't reach.""
"The trust.""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"Something beneath it.""
The brass key in my hand suddenly seemed heavier.
"The safe.""
She nodded.
"Your father built a second vault beneath the River Oaks property.""
"What is inside?""
"Original contracts. Account ledgers. Ownership records.""
Daniel frowned.
"Enough to expose everyone.""
"Yes.""
"And Ethan has been searching for it.""
"For years.""
I thought of the changed locks.
The safe.
The hidden documents.
"That's why he needed me out of the house.""
My mother nodded.
"He believed the trust could be challenged once you were removed.""
"But the trust protects me.""
"Only while you control the original beneficiary agreement.""
I felt a chill.
"The document Marcus had.""
"That wasn't the original.""
"Then where is the original?""
My mother looked at the key.
"Under the house.""
A floorboard creaked upstairs.
All three of us froze.
Daniel reached beneath his jacket.
My mother whispered, "They're here.""
I looked toward the ceiling.
"Who?""
She didn't answer.
A shadow crossed the upstairs landing.
Then footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Someone was walking toward the staircase.
Daniel moved in front of me.
"Stay behind me.""
The footsteps stopped.
Then a man's voice called from above.
"Claire.""
I knew it instantly.
Ethan.
My heart jumped.
"He's alive.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That's not necessarily good.""
Ethan appeared at the top of the stairs.
He looked terrible.
His shirt was covered in dried blood.
One sleeve hung over a bandaged shoulder.
But his eyes were clear.
He looked directly at me.
"Claire.""
I stared.
"You followed us.""
"I had to.""
"Why?""
"Because Margaret wasn't the one who changed the locks.""
I looked at my mother.
"She was.""
Ethan shook his head.
"She only delivered the message.""
My mother's face hardened.
"Enough.""
Ethan started down the stairs.
"Claire, your mother has been lying to you.""
My mother stood.
"You don't get to accuse anyone of lying.""
"You killed Dad.""
Silence.
I turned toward her.
"Did you?""
Ethan stopped halfway down the stairs.
My mother closed her eyes.
When she opened them, they were filled with tears.
"I didn't kill him.""
Ethan laughed bitterly.
"Then why did you disappear?""
"Because they wanted me blamed.""
"For what?""
"For his death.""
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded slowly.
"Your mother disappeared because the evidence pointed toward her.""
"Who made it point toward her?""
She answered herself.
"Margaret.""
Ethan stared.
"That's impossible.""
"No.""
My mother stood.
"Margaret knew your father wanted to expose Jonathan's network.""
"So she framed you.""
"Yes.""
"For my father's murder.""
"Yes.""
I felt dizzy.
"Then who actually killed him?""
My mother looked at Ethan.
"Marcus's father ordered it.""
Ethan's face changed.
"Jonathan?""
"He was supposed to die that night.""
My voice was barely audible.
"Your father killed Jonathan?""
"No.""
Daniel interrupted.
"Your father tried to arrest him.""
My mother nodded.
"But Jonathan had already arranged an escape.""
"What happened?""
"Your father intercepted him at the warehouse.""
"And?""
My mother looked at me.
"Jonathan wasn't alone.""
I felt my heartbeat quicken.
"Who was with him?""
"Margaret.""
I closed my eyes.
The same name again.
The same woman who had spent seven years telling me I wasn't enough.
The same woman who had thrown me outside in the rain.
The same woman who had raised Ethan.
But there was another question.
"Where was Ethan?""
My mother answered quietly.
"With me.""
Ethan looked confused.
"You said I wasn't there.""
"You were a baby.""
"I don't remember.""
"Of course you don't.""
She looked at him.
"That night, Jonathan ordered Margaret to take you.""
"Why?""
"Because he planned to disappear.""
"And what did she do?""
"She took you.""
"Then why did she return?""
My mother looked at me.
"To finish the job.""
A sound came from outside.
A car door slamming.
Daniel rushed to the window.
Headlights appeared at the end of the driveway.
Two vehicles.
Then three.
My mother grabbed my hand.
"The vault.""
"What?""
"The people outside are not here for Ethan.""
She looked at me.
"They're here for you.""
Daniel drew his weapon.
"We need to move.""
Ethan came down the last steps.
"Where?""
"Basement.""
He looked at me.
"You know where the stairs are?""
I shook my head.
My mother pulled aside an old rug beneath the dining table.
A wooden hatch appeared.
I stared at it.
"I've lived here half my life.""
She gave me a sad smile.
"Your father didn't want you to find it.""
She opened the hatch.
A narrow staircase descended into darkness.
Daniel went first.
Then me.
My mother followed.
Ethan came last.
We reached the bottom.
The walls were concrete.
Cold.
Damp.
A single bulb hung from the ceiling.
At the far end stood a steel door.
I held up the brass key.
My hand shook.
"That's it?""
My mother nodded.
I inserted the key.
It fit.
The lock turned.
The door opened.
Inside were dozens of boxes.
Files.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
And a large black ledger sitting on a pedestal.
My father's handwriting was visible on the cover.
*BENEFICIARY RECORDS — ORIGINAL*
I stepped forward.
My mother stopped me.
"Claire.""
I turned.
Her face had gone pale.
"Before you open it, you need to know one thing.""
"What?""
"The person who ordered your father's death wasn't Jonathan.""
Ethan looked at her.
"Then who?""
She stared directly at me.
"You.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"What?""
My mother pointed to the ledger.
"Someone forged a contract using your name.""
Daniel shook his head.
"She was a child.""
"I know.""
"So how could she order anything?""
"She didn't.""
My mother swallowed.
"Someone used Claire's identity years before she even knew about the trust.""
I looked at the ledger.
"Who?""
My mother whispered:
"Your father believed it was your mother's brother.""
I froze.
"My uncle?""
"You never met him.""
"Why?""
"Because he died before you were born.""
Ethan stepped closer.
"That's impossible.""
My mother shook her head.
"No.""
She looked toward the ceiling.
Outside, heavy footsteps were now pounding across the house.
"They told everyone he was dead.""
I stared.
"But?""
She slowly opened the ledger.
A photograph was tucked inside.
A young man stood beside my mother and father.
I knew him.
I had seen his face in an old family photograph.
But that wasn't what made my blood run cold.
He was wearing the same signet ring Daniel had shown me on one of my father's old documents.
My mother whispered:
"Your uncle is alive.""
The basement door above us slammed shut.
Then someone shouted from the other side.
"Claire!""
I knew that voice.
Marcus.
May you like
He was standing upstairs.
And he was not alone.
