Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

"Claire!""

Marcus's voice echoed through the basement ceiling.

Daniel immediately turned toward the stairs.

"They're inside.""

Ethan looked at my mother.

"You said nobody knew about this.""

"I thought nobody did.""

Another heavy impact shook the ceiling.

Metal groaned.

Someone was trying to force the basement door open.

My mother grabbed my wrist.

"The ledger.""

I pulled it from the pedestal.

"What do I do with it?""

"Never let them take it.""

Daniel drew his weapon.

"There's another exit.""

He pointed toward the back wall.

A narrow tunnel disappeared into darkness.

I stared at him.

"Where does that go?""

"An old drainage passage.""

Ethan gave a bitter laugh.

"Of course my family has a secret tunnel.""

"This isn't your family," I said.

He looked at me.

"No.""

His voice was quiet.

"Not anymore.""

The basement door shook again.

Marcus shouted from above.

"Claire, listen to me!""

I looked at the stairs.

"What do you want?""

"The ledger.""

"Why?""

"Because your father lied about what it contains.""

My mother stepped forward.

"Don't believe him.""

Marcus answered through the door.

"Evelyn, you know I'm telling the truth.""

Daniel looked at me.

"We don't have time.""

We hurried into the tunnel.

I carried the ledger beneath my coat.

My mother went first.

Ethan followed.

Daniel stayed behind.

"Go," he whispered.

We had barely gone ten feet when the basement door exploded inward.

Men shouted.

A gunshot cracked through the tunnel entrance.

Daniel returned fire.

"Keep moving!""

I ran.

The tunnel smelled of damp stone and rust.

My shoes slipped on the wet floor.

Behind us came shouting.

Then silence.

"Ethan?"" I called.

"I'm here.""

My mother grabbed my shoulder.

"Don't stop.""

We finally reached a metal ladder.

Daniel's voice wasn't behind us anymore.

I stopped.

"Where's Daniel?""

Ethan turned.

"He'll follow.""

A gunshot echoed faintly from far behind.

My mother pushed me toward the ladder.

"Claire!""

I climbed.

A metal hatch opened above us.

We emerged behind the old boathouse.

Cold wind hit my face.

The bay stretched black beneath the moonlight.

Ethan climbed out beside me.

Then stopped.

He was staring at something across the water.

I followed his gaze.

A figure stood on the dock.

An older man.

Gray hair.

Dark coat.

One hand resting on a cane.

He looked directly at us.

My mother froze.

"No.""

Ethan whispered:

"That's impossible.""

The man stepped closer.

The moonlight caught his face.

I knew him.

Not personally.

From photographs.

From the portrait tucked inside my father's safe.

From the face in old records.

My uncle.

The man everyone said had died before I was born.

He smiled.

"Hello, Claire.""

My mother stepped in front of me.

"You were never supposed to come back.""

He looked at her.

"And yet here I am.""

I stared at him.

"My uncle?""

He nodded.

"Jonathan Bennett.""

My throat tightened.

"You're alive.""

"I've been alive for thirty-three years.""

I looked at my mother.

"You knew.""

"No.""

Her voice shook.

"I thought he was dead.""

Jonathan laughed softly.

"Your father wanted you to think that.""

"Why?""

"Because your father was terrified of me.""

I raised the ledger.

"Did you order his death?""

Jonathan's expression changed.

For the first time, the smile disappeared.

"No.""

I didn't believe him.

He noticed.

"Your father was murdered by someone much closer to you than I ever was.""

"Who?""

He pointed toward the house.

"Ask Ethan.""

I turned.

Ethan had gone pale.

"What does he know?""

Jonathan smiled again.

"Everything.""

"Ethan?""

My husband looked at me.

His eyes were wet.

"I knew my mother was alive.""

My chest tightened.

"What?""

"Not your mother.""

"Evelyn?""

"No.""

He looked toward Jonathan.

"Him.""

Jonathan nodded.

"Ethan discovered me three years ago.""

I stared at Ethan.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of him?""

"Of what he'd make me do.""

Jonathan laughed.

"Ethan has always been weak where money is concerned.""

Ethan's face hardened.

"You used me.""

"I offered you an opportunity.""

"You threatened me.""

"I reminded you what happens when people refuse.""

I stepped between them.

"What opportunity?""

Jonathan looked at the ledger.

"The trust.""

I tightened my grip.

"Again.""

"Your father transferred the controlling interests to Claire because he knew Ethan could not be trusted.""

Ethan looked down.

Jonathan continued.

"But your father made one mistake.""

"What?""

"He believed Claire's identity was secure.""

My stomach dropped.

"The forged contracts.""

Jonathan nodded.

"We used her name years before she knew what it meant.""

"Who is we?""

He looked at my mother.

She shook her head.

"I had nothing to do with it.""

Jonathan laughed.

"You always loved playing innocent.""

My mother's expression hardened.

"You destroyed everything.""

"I rebuilt it.""

"You killed my husband.""

"No.""

He looked at me.

"She did.""

My mother went still.

I turned toward her.

"What does he mean?""

Jonathan pointed at the ledger.

"Open it.""

I did.

The first pages contained beneficiary records.

Then property transfers.

Bank accounts.

Names.

Dates.

I turned pages rapidly.

Then stopped.

A document dated five years earlier.

The night my father died.

My name appeared at the top.

Beneath it was a signature.

My mother's.

I stared.

"What's this?""

My mother didn't speak.

Ethan stepped closer.

"Claire.""

The document was titled:

*Emergency Medical Authority and Estate Intervention.*

I read the first paragraph.

It stated that my mother had authority to act on my father's behalf if he became incapacitated.

But my father had been dead when the document was signed.

I looked at the date.

Two days before his death.

"Why did you sign this?""

My mother was crying now.

"I didn't.""

"That's your signature.""

"It's forged.""

Jonathan shook his head.

"No.""

My mother looked at him.

"You stole my identity.""

"Your husband stole mine first.""

I looked from one to the other.

"What was this used for?""

Jonathan answered.

"To access the trust.""

My stomach tightened.

"Did you?""

"No.""

"Then who did?""

Jonathan looked at Ethan.

"Ethan.""

I turned.

"Ethan shook his head.

"I never took control.""

"Not directly.""

Jonathan smiled.

"He used his mother's authority.""

I stared at my mother.

Margaret.

Of course.

Too many mothers.

Too many lies.

"Margaret forged the document?""

Jonathan nodded.

"With Ethan.""

Ethan whispered, "I was twenty-eight.""

"You knew what you were doing.""

"I didn't know where it would lead.""

"You knew enough.""

I looked at Ethan.

"Did you use that document to move money?""

He closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

My heart sank.

"How much?""

"Not forty-six million.""

"How much?""

"About twelve.""

I felt sick.

"And the rest?""

Ethan looked at Jonathan.

Jonathan said:

"I took it.""

The silence was absolute.

My uncle had been behind the missing money.

Ethan had helped him.

Margaret had forged the authority.

Marcus had handled the shell companies.

And somehow, my father had known.

"Why didn't Dad expose you?""

Jonathan's expression darkened.

"Because I had you.""

I froze.

"What?""

He stepped closer.

"When you were a child, I threatened to take you.""

My mother whispered, "He tried.""

"I told your father that if he went to the authorities, Claire would disappear.""

My hands went cold.

"So Dad stayed silent.""

"He sacrificed his reputation to keep you alive.""

I looked down at the ledger.

There were pages filled with notes in my father's handwriting.

One sentence appeared again and again.

*Protect Claire at all costs.*

I felt tears burning my eyes.

Then another page caught my attention.

A transfer record.

Five million dollars.

Paid to a private investigator.

Recipient:

*Daniel Reed.*

Date:

Three days before my father's death.

I looked around.

"Where is Daniel?""

No one answered.

Then I heard footsteps behind us.

We all turned.

Daniel emerged from the tunnel.

His jacket was torn.

Blood ran down his forehead.

But he was alive.

He looked directly at Jonathan.

"You should have stayed dead.""

Jonathan smiled.

"Daniel.""

"You failed.""

Jonathan's smile vanished.

Daniel raised his weapon.

"Claire, get behind me.""

Jonathan didn't move.

Instead, he looked at Ethan.

"Tell her.""

Ethan's face crumpled.

"Tell her what?""

"The final part.""

Ethan looked at me.

I waited.

His voice was barely audible.

"Your father wasn't killed because of the trust.""

"Then why?""

He swallowed.

"Because he discovered who was actually helping Jonathan.""

"Who?""

Ethan looked at my mother.

"No.""

I turned toward her.

My mother's face was wet with tears.

"I was trying to save you.""

"Who?""

Ethan closed his eyes.

"Your mother.""

My heart stopped.

Then he said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew.

"Your mother didn't kill your father.""

He looked at me.

"She saved him.""

I stared.

"Then who did?""

Ethan's voice broke.

"I did.""

The world went silent.

"You?""

"I poisoned him.""

My mother covered her mouth.

"I thought the dose would only make him unconscious.""

Ethan looked at the ground.

"Jonathan gave me the poison.""

Daniel's weapon lowered slightly.

"And your father?""

Ethan whispered:

"He knew it was me.""

I couldn't breathe.

"He knew?""

"He looked at me before he collapsed.""

Tears ran down Ethan's face.

"And he said one thing.""

I couldn't speak.

"What did he say?""

Ethan looked up at me.

"He said, 'Claire will forgive you before she understands you.''"

The ledger slipped from my fingers.

It hit the ground.

And as the pages spread across the wet dock, one final sheet slid free.

At the bottom was my father's signature.

May you like

Above it were six words:

*The child is not Ethan's.*
