Chapter 10: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The video froze on the screen.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody even blinked.

The image showed a hospital hallway from three years earlier.

Ethan.

Victor.

My mother.

And one more person.

A person who should not have existed.

A person whose face made Daniel step backward.

“No.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

Claire looked at him.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t answer.

His eyes stayed locked on the screen.

Because standing behind Ethan in that old hospital recording was a man everyone believed had died before Daniel ever met Claire.

A man named Andrew.

Daniel’s childhood friend.

The man who had supposedly died in a car accident overseas.

The man whose funeral Daniel had attended.

The man whose death had left a scar on my brother for years.

But there he was.

Alive.

Standing in a hospital hallway.

Talking to Ethan.

Victor stopped the video.

“Daniel…”

“Play it.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel’s voice became stronger.

“Play it.””

Victor pressed the button.

The video continued.

Andrew walked toward Ethan.

The quality was poor, but the voices were clear.

“You’re sure this will work?”” Andrew asked.

Ethan smiled.

“Claire will disappear. The baby will disappear. And Daniel will have no memory of what happened.””

Daniel grabbed the edge of the table.

His face was empty.

Like his mind couldn’t process what he was hearing.

Claire looked at him.

“Daniel…”

He lifted a hand.

Not because he didn’t want comfort.

Because he needed silence.

He needed to hear everything.

Andrew looked nervous in the recording.

“What about Daniel?””

Ethan laughed.

“He’s the easiest part.””

The room went cold.

The video continued.

“He trusts everyone around him,” Ethan said.

Andrew replied, “And if he remembers?””

Ethan’s smile disappeared.

“He won’t.””

The screen went dark.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Andrew was alive.””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

My mother covered her face.

“I didn’t know.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“You knew about Ethan.””

She cried.

“I knew he was dangerous.””

“But you didn’t tell me.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

His eyes moved around the room.

“Everyone.””

Claire stepped closer.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel looked at her.

The anger in his eyes softened.

But only slightly.

“You knew about Andrew?””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

“Then who did?””

Nobody answered.

Victor did.

“Andrew was the person behind everything.””

Ethan suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

He stood near the doorway.

A strange calm had returned to his face.

“You all think you understand now.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You planned this.””

Ethan smiled.

“You think a video tells the whole story?””

Victor stepped forward.

“It tells enough.””

“No,” Ethan said.

He looked at Daniel.

“You still don’t know the worst part.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“What could possibly be worse?””

Ethan looked at Claire.

Then Emma.

Then my mother.

“The accident wasn’t meant to erase Claire’s baby.””

Everyone froze.

“It was meant to erase Daniel.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Ethan walked closer.

“You found out too much.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t remember.””

“Exactly.””

Ethan smiled.

“That was the point.””

Claire stepped in front of Daniel.

“Stop.””

Ethan ignored her.

“You found documents connecting Andrew and me.””

Daniel frowned.

“What documents?””

Ethan laughed.

“The reason your memory was damaged.””

My brother went still.

“You’re saying…”

“Yes.””

Ethan’s eyes became cold.

“You weren’t an innocent victim.””

Daniel looked horrified.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan leaned closer.

“You were investigating us.””

The room changed.

Because suddenly Daniel’s missing memories weren’t just a tragedy.

They were evidence.

“You were close to exposing everything,” Ethan continued.

“So Andrew decided you needed to forget.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Did you know?””

Claire shook her head immediately.

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I knew you were hurt. I knew you had lost memories. I never knew why.””

Ethan smiled.

“That’s the part she never understood.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

Ethan pointed toward Emma.

“She thought she was protecting a child.””

He looked at Claire.

“But she was protecting the person who could destroy us.””

Daniel frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Ethan’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.

“Emma saw something.””

Claire froze.

“She was a baby.””

“She was old enough.””

Nobody understood.

Ethan continued.

“The night of the accident, Emma wasn’t the only witness.””

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“Witness to what?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked toward Emma.

The little girl was holding Claire’s hand.

Completely unaware that adults were discussing the moment that changed her entire life.

Then Ethan said:

“She saw Andrew.””

Claire looked confused.

“Impossible.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

He smiled slightly.

“That’s why she was the real secret.””

Daniel looked at Emma.

“What did she see?””

Before Ethan could answer, the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Tired.

Holding a folder.

Daniel stared.

Because he recognized her too.

She was the nurse from the hospital.

The woman who had signed the death report.

The woman who told everyone Claire’s baby had not survived.

She looked at Ethan.

Then at Daniel.

“I’m sorry.””

Her voice trembled.

“I should have come sooner.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at Emma.

Then whispered:

“I’m the person who helped save her.””

A pause.

Then she added:

“And I’m the person who knows who Emma’s real father is.””

The room went silent.

May you like

Because nobody expected the next words.

Not even Claire.
