Chapter 9: The Person Behind The Plan

Daniel ran downstairs.

The rest of us followed.

The celebration room that had once been filled with laughter now looked like the scene of a nightmare.

The decorations were still hanging.

The balloons still floated near the ceiling.

But everything felt different.

Because now we knew.

This family had been built on secrets.

And Ethan was standing in the middle of them.

Beside him was my mother’s former lawyer.

A man named Victor.

Daniel stopped.

“Victor?””

The lawyer smiled.

“Hello, Daniel.””

Nobody understood.

Daniel looked furious.

“You’re involved?””

Victor adjusted his suit.

“I was involved.””

Claire held Emma’s hand tightly.

The little girl looked frightened.

Ethan noticed.

“Claire, let her go.””

Daniel stepped in front of them.

“No.””

Ethan looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“I understand enough.””

Victor sighed.

“This is becoming emotional.””

Daniel laughed.

“Emotional?””

He pointed around the room.

“You helped hide a child.””

Victor remained calm.

“I helped protect a child.””

Claire’s expression changed.

“Protect her from who?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“From him?””

Victor looked at Ethan.

Then away.

That small movement told us everything.

Ethan noticed too.

“You’re going to betray me now?””

Victor shook his head.

“I’m correcting a mistake.””

Ethan stepped toward him.

“You don’t get to do that.””

Daniel looked between them.

“What mistake?””

Victor took a breath.

“The mistake was believing Ethan could control this forever.””

Ethan’s face darkened.

“You’re forgetting who paid you.””

Victor looked at him.

“And you’re forgetting who kept records.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared.

“What records?””

Victor reached into his briefcase.

Not a phone.

Not a folder.

A small storage drive.

“I recorded everything.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“You wouldn’t.””

“I did.””

Victor looked at Daniel.

“Your brother has spent years making everyone believe he was the victim.””

He placed the drive on the table.

“But I have proof that he planned everything.””

Ethan moved quickly.

Too quickly.

Daniel noticed.

He stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Ethan stopped.

For the first time, Daniel wasn’t the confused man from earlier.

He was angry.

Focused.

Dangerous.

“You’ve lied to me for years.””

Ethan stared.

“You have no idea what happened.””

Daniel looked at Emma.

Then Claire.

“Yes, I do.””

Ethan laughed.

“No. You know what they told you.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He pointed at the drive.

“Now I’m going to know what you tried to hide.””

Victor connected the drive to the laptop on the table.

Everyone gathered around.

A video file appeared.

Date:

Three years ago.

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

Victor clicked play.

The screen showed a hospital hallway.

A younger Ethan walking.

Holding documents.

Then another person appeared.

Daniel leaned closer.

Because he recognized the person immediately.

His own mother.

The video continued.

Ethan said:

“She doesn’t know yet.””

My mother’s face went pale.

Victor’s voice from the recording answered:

“She will.””

Ethan smiled.

“Good.””

Daniel froze.

Because he knew those voices.

They weren’t strangers.

They were people he loved.

The video continued.

Ethan said:

“Once the accident happens, everyone will think Claire lost the baby.””

My mother covered her mouth.

Claire grabbed Daniel’s arm.

“No…”

The recording played louder.

Victor asked:

“And Daniel?””

Ethan smiled.

“Daniel won’t remember enough to stop us.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at the screen.

His entire body went cold.

Because the truth was finally there.

Not rumors.

Not accusations.

Proof.

But then the video showed one more person entering the hospital hallway.

A person none of us expected.

A person who changed everything.

Daniel stepped closer to the screen.

“No…”

Claire looked at him.

“What?””

He pointed.

“That’s impossible.””

Because the person walking toward Ethan in the recording…

Was someone who had been dead for three years.

And Ethan whispered:

“That was the night we made the deal.””

The screen froze.

And beneath the frozen image was a timestamp.

The day of the accident.

May you like

The day Daniel thought he lost everything.

The day someone else was controlling the entire story.
