Chapter 14: The Last Person They Suspected

Nobody moved.

The sentence stayed in the air.

Daniel looked at his father.

The man who had taught him how to ride a bicycle.

The man who had held him when he was sick.

The man he trusted more than anyone.

“You?””

His father didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Daniel laughed quietly.

A broken laugh.

“Everyone.””

He looked around the room.

“Everyone knew.””

Claire stepped toward him.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I need to hear this.””

His father sighed.

“I never wanted you involved.””

Daniel stared.

“You signed the documents.””

His father looked down.

“Yes.””

“You helped change the records.””

“Yes.””

Claire whispered:

“Why?””

His father looked at Ethan.

“Because Ethan had something over me.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

His father sat down.

“I was the one who introduced Ethan to the family.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel remembered.

Years ago.

His father had praised Ethan.

Called him ambitious.

Called him trustworthy.

“I thought he was the perfect partner.””

His father continued.

“I was wrong.””

Ethan smiled.

“You were weak.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You used him.””

“Yes.””

Ethan didn’t even deny it.

“I used everyone.””

Claire looked disgusted.

“Why?””

Ethan looked at Emma.

“Because people protect what they love.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“And you used that.””

“Yes.””

Ethan’s eyes moved around the room.

“Daniel loved his family.””

He looked at Claire.

“Claire loved her baby.””

He looked at my mother.

“Your mother loved keeping secrets.””

Then he looked at Victor.

“Everyone had a weakness.””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“And yours?””

Ethan smiled.

“I didn’t have one.””

But Daniel noticed something.

A hesitation.

A tiny one.

He looked at Claire.

Then Emma.

Then Ethan.

“You’re lying.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel continued.

“You always talk like you’re untouchable.””

He stepped closer.

“But you’re not.””

Ethan’s smile faded.

Daniel pointed at him.

“You’re scared.””

For the first time, Ethan looked angry.

Not controlled.

Not calm.

Angry.

Daniel saw it.

And understood.

“You’re scared because Emma remembers something.””

Claire froze.

“What?””

Ethan looked at Emma.

The little girl stood quietly beside her mother.

Confused.

Daniel knelt.

“Emma.””

She looked at him.

“Do you remember the night at the hospital?””

Nobody breathed.

Emma frowned.

A child trying to search through a memory too old.

“I remember…”

Claire held her breath.

“What do you remember, sweetheart?””

Emma looked at Ethan.

Then whispered:

“He was yelling.””

Ethan went still.

Emma continued:

“He was angry.””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“What else?””

The girl squeezed her stuffed rabbit.

“He said…”

She paused.

“He said Daddy would disappear.””

The room went cold.

Daniel’s face changed.

Because that sentence explained everything.

Ethan had not just wanted Emma.

He wanted Daniel gone.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Children remember things incorrectly.””

But nobody believed him.

Victor suddenly grabbed his laptop.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

He looked shocked.

“I found something.””

Daniel walked over.

“What?””

Victor turned the screen.

A hidden file.

A recording.

Created the same night as the accident.

Victor clicked play.

At first, there was only noise.

Then voices.

Ethan.

Andrew.

And another voice.

A voice everyone recognized.

Daniel’s father.

Ethan said:

“If Daniel remembers, we all lose.””

Andrew answered:

“He won’t.””

Then Daniel’s father spoke.

“What about the baby?””

Ethan replied:

“She won’t matter.””

Claire covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

Daniel’s father said:

“And Daniel?””

A pause.

Then Ethan answered:

“Make sure he forgets.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

Daniel looked at his father.

The betrayal was complete.

His father looked broken.

“I was trying to stop it.””

Daniel stared.

“No.””

His voice trembled.

“You were trying to survive it.””

His father started crying.

“Yes.””

A confession.

Finally.

“Yes.””

Daniel turned away.

For years, he had searched for the person who stole his life.

The person who took his memories.

The person who stole his daughter’s first years.

Now he knew.

It wasn’t one person.

It was an entire chain of fear.

But there was still one unanswered question.

Andrew.

The man who started everything.

The man who disappeared.

The man who knew the original truth.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Where is Andrew?””

Ethan smiled faintly.

“You really don’t know?””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Tell me.””

Ethan looked toward the window.

“He never disappeared.””

A pause.

“He changed his name.””

Everyone froze.

“Where is he?””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

Then whispered:

“He’s been closer than you think.””

The front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Different.

But familiar.

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

Because the man standing outside wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone who had been helping them uncover the truth.

Someone who had claimed to be on their side.

Someone who had been there from the beginning.

Nathan.

But Nathan wasn’t alone.

He was holding a folder.

And inside was the final piece of proof.

He looked at Daniel.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel stared.

“What are you sorry for?””

Nathan looked at Ethan.

May you like

Then answered:

“Because I’m the reason you lost your memory.””
