Chapter 5: The Family Betrayal
Daniel didn’t move.
Nobody did.
The accusation was too unbelievable.
Too impossible.
My mother stared at Ethan.
“You’re sick.””
Ethan smiled.
“That’s exactly what you said when you thought nobody would believe me.””
Daniel looked between them.
“Mom?””
She immediately shook her head.
“Don’t listen to him.””
“Then explain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Daniel’s face changed.
“Explain.””
My mother sat down slowly.
Her hands trembled.
“I didn’t know everything.””
Daniel looked devastated.
“You knew enough.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“I told you not to involve her.””
My brother turned toward Claire.
“You knew my mother was involved?””
Claire looked down.
“Yes.””
The hurt on Daniel’s face was almost impossible to watch.
“So everybody knew except me.””
“No,” Claire whispered.
She stepped forward.
“I tried to tell you.””
“When?””
She couldn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
Daniel walked away from everyone.
He went toward the window overlooking the backyard.
The same backyard where, an hour earlier, we had been celebrating.
Where everyone had been laughing.
Where we thought the biggest problem was a misunderstanding about a wrapper.
Now the entire foundation of his life had cracked.
Ethan leaned against the wall.
“You should hear the whole story.””
Daniel didn’t turn around.
“Why?””
“Because Claire isn’t the villain.””
Everyone looked at him.
Even Claire.
Ethan continued.
“She made mistakes. Big ones.””
Claire looked down.
“But she wasn’t the person who started this.””
Daniel slowly turned.
“Then who did?””
Ethan looked at my mother.
The answer was obvious.
My mother stood.
“Enough.””
Daniel stared at her.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“I’m done being protected.””
She looked older than she had that morning.
“I made one mistake.””
Claire laughed softly.
“One?””
My mother looked at her.
“I was trying to fix something.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What something?””
My mother sat back down.
“When Claire left Ethan, she had nowhere to go.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
“She came to us.””
Claire nodded.
“I was scared.””
My mother continued.
“I helped her.””
“Then why hide it?””
My mother looked at Daniel.
“Because Ethan threatened us.””
Daniel frowned.
“You said he was dangerous.””
“He was.””
My mother’s voice shook.
“He said if anyone helped Claire, he would expose everything.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Expose what?””
My mother looked at Ethan.
Then at Claire.
Then finally at Daniel.
“The truth about the accident.””
The room changed.
Daniel’s face went blank.
“What accident?””
Nobody answered.
Ethan did.
“The one your mother helped cover up.””
My father suddenly stood.
“Ethan, stop.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“You too?””
My father looked guilty.
That was when Daniel understood.
It wasn’t one person.
It was everyone.
The people he trusted most had been carrying pieces of a story he never knew existed.
“What accident?””
His voice was barely above a whisper.
Claire walked closer.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
He looked at her.
“I need the truth.””
Claire took a deep breath.
“Three years ago, before I met you, Ethan tried to take my baby away.””
She paused.
“I ran.””
Daniel listened.
“Your mother found me.””
My brother looked at our mother.
“She helped me escape.””
My mother nodded.
“Then what happened?””
Claire looked at Ethan.
“Ethan followed us.””
Ethan’s face changed.
For the first time, he looked nervous.
Daniel noticed.
“What happened?””
Claire’s voice became smaller.
“There was a crash.””
The room went silent.
“Ethan’s car hit us.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
“My baby was injured.””
She touched her stomach unconsciously.
“And I lost the pregnancy.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“You killed your own child?””
Ethan’s face hardened.
“That’s not what happened.””
Claire looked at him.
“You know it is.””
“No.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“You don’t get to rewrite history.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Then tell me your version.””
Ethan smiled.
“My version is that Claire was already planning to leave me.””
Claire whispered, “Because you were dangerous.””
“My version,” Ethan continued, ignoring her, “is that your mother helped her disappear.””
Daniel looked at his mother.
“And the accident?””
Ethan’s eyes moved toward the hospital bracelet.
“That’s where things became complicated.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan reached into his pocket.
This time, he pulled out a phone.
“I have proof.””
Claire immediately reacted.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
Because her fear was back.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Fear.
Daniel noticed.
“What is on that phone?””
Claire didn’t answer.
Ethan pressed a button.
A recording began playing.
At first, there was only static.
Then a voice.
A voice Daniel recognized instantly.
His own.
From three years earlier.
And then another voice.
Claire’s.
But the words they said were impossible.
Because they proved that the biggest lie of all…
May you like
Wasn’t about the pregnancy.
It was about what happened the night everything changed.
