Chapter 6: The Recording That Changed Everything
The recording played through the speakers.
Nobody breathed.
Daniel stood completely still.
His own voice filled the room.
“You need to leave before he finds you.””
Claire’s voice followed.
“I can’t keep running.””
“You have to.””
“I’m tired, Daniel.””
The younger version of my brother sounded desperate.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Desperate.
Everyone looked at Daniel.
He looked like he was watching someone else’s life.
“That’s impossible,” he whispered.
Ethan smiled.
“Is it?””
Daniel looked at him.
“When was this recorded?””
“Three years ago.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I never met Claire three years ago.””
Claire looked at him sadly.
“Yes, you did.””
The words hit him.
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
She wiped her tears.
“You don’t remember.””
The recording continued.
Daniel’s voice said:
“I promise you, I’ll help you.””
Claire’s voice:
“You don’t even know me.””
“I know enough.””
The audio stopped.
The silence afterward was worse.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Why don’t I remember?””
Claire looked down.
“Because you were injured.””
Nobody spoke.
She continued.
“After the accident, you lost parts of your memory.””
Daniel touched his forehead.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“You forgot meeting me.””
The room felt like it was spinning.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
Then his mother.
Then back at Claire.
“So when I met you…”
Claire nodded.
“You were meeting me again.””
A thousand emotions crossed his face.
Anger.
Confusion.
Pain.
“But you knew.””
“Yes.””
“You knew I had forgotten.””
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
Claire started crying.
“Because I fell in love with you twice.””
Nobody expected that answer.
Even Daniel.
She continued.
“The first time was when you helped me escape Ethan.””
Her voice softened.
“You didn’t know my name. You didn’t know my past. You didn’t know anything.””
She smiled sadly.
“You just saw someone who needed help.””
Daniel looked away.
“And the second time?””
Claire whispered:
“The second time was when you met me after your memory loss.””
The room became painfully quiet.
Daniel’s anger weakened.
But the betrayal remained.
“You should have told me.””
“I know.””
“You should have trusted me.””
“I know.””
He looked at the floor.
“Why didn’t you?””
Claire’s voice broke.
“Because I was afraid that if you remembered everything, you would remember the pain too.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What pain?””
Ethan laughed.
“There it is.””
Everyone turned.
Ethan looked satisfied.
“The part nobody told you.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What?””
Ethan pointed at the recording.
“You think Claire was protecting you?””
He shook his head.
“She was protecting herself.””
Claire stepped back.
“Stop.””
“No.””
Ethan smiled.
“Tell him.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Tell me what?””
She didn’t answer.
Ethan did.
“The accident wasn’t random.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel stared.
“What are you saying?””
Ethan leaned forward.
“I’m saying someone caused it.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Who?””
Ethan smiled.
“That’s the question, isn’t it?””
My mother looked terrified.
Daniel noticed.
“Mom.””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t.””
Nobody believed her.
Because she didn’t say “I don’t know.””
She said “I didn’t.””
A confession hidden inside a denial.
Daniel stepped toward her.
“What did you do?””
My mother cried.
“I was trying to save you.””
“From what?””
She looked at Ethan.
“From him.””
Ethan laughed.
“Still blaming me.””
My mother’s voice rose.
“You threatened my son!””
Daniel froze.
“You threatened me?””
Ethan’s smile disappeared.
“You don’t remember.””
The room went silent.
Daniel whispered:
“Remember what?””
Ethan stepped closer.
“Before the accident, you found out what I had done.””
Daniel frowned.
“What you had done?””
Ethan looked at Claire.
“She told you.””
Claire closed her eyes.
Daniel looked at her.
“What did you tell me?””
Claire’s face crumpled.
“The truth about Ethan.””
“And?””
She whispered:
“That he was responsible for something terrible.””
Daniel waited.
But Claire didn’t finish.
Because Ethan did.
“He wasn’t supposed to survive.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
Ethan’s voice became cold.
“That night wasn’t about Claire’s baby.””
He looked directly at Daniel.
“It was about you.””
The words sent chills through the room.
Daniel took a step back.
“No.””
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.””
He pointed at the recording.
“That’s why Claire was so afraid.””
Daniel stared at the phone.
The recording.
The hospital bracelet.
The secrets.
Everything.
Then his phone suddenly rang.
Nobody moved.
Because the number appearing on the screen belonged to someone who was supposed to be impossible.
Someone who had been missing for three years.
Daniel looked down.
The name on the screen was:
“Ethan’s Brother.””
And beneath it was a message preview.
May you like
One sentence.
Daniel, if you want the truth about the night of the accident, don’t answer that call.
