Chapter 3: The Person Everyone Trusted

Nobody spoke after Daniel read the message.

Not even my mother.

Especially not my mother.

Daniel stared at the phone as if the words might rearrange themselves if he looked long enough.

Finally, he lifted his eyes.

“Mom?””

My mother’s face went white.

“What?””

Daniel held up the phone.

“Why did you send this to Claire?””

The room exploded into whispers.

My mother shook her head.

“I don’t know what you think you saw, but—”

“Don’t.””

Daniel’s voice stopped her.

For the first time in my life, I saw my brother look at our mother like she was a stranger.

The message was short.

Only a few sentences.

But it was enough.

If you don’t do what I ask, Daniel will find out the truth.

You know what happened.

You know what he will do when he learns.

Claire stood beside him, trembling.

“I never wanted to involve your family.””

My mother looked at her.

“You’re blaming me?””

Claire laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I’m telling the truth.””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“What happened three years ago?””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“This isn’t my story to tell.””

Daniel turned to Claire.

“Then tell me.””

She looked down.

For months, she had protected a secret.

Now she finally had nowhere left to hide.

“When I met you, I told you I had never been married before.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Claire swallowed.

“That was a lie.””

The words hit him.

Again.

Another crack in the foundation.

“I was married before.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel’s face became unreadable.

“To who?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“Ethan.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant something to Daniel.

His expression changed instantly.

“Ethan?””

My mother sat down.

Because she knew.

Daniel looked at her.

“You knew?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You all knew.””

Claire stepped forward.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She had no answer.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“So the pregnancy wasn’t the only secret.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“No.””

She looked at him.

“It wasn’t.””

The room felt smaller.

Like the walls were closing in.

I remembered three years earlier.

The sudden disappearance of a man named Ethan.

The rumors.

The family refusing to talk about it.

Daniel had always said some chapters of his life were better left closed.

But now one of those chapters had walked back into the room.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Ethan was dangerous.””

Daniel frowned.

“He was Claire’s husband.””

“He was also the reason Claire was afraid to tell you the truth.””

Claire nodded.

“Ethan wasn’t just my past.””

She looked at the phone in Daniel’s hand.

“He was connected to your mother.””

My mother stood suddenly.

“That’s enough.””

Everyone turned.

She looked angry.

Not sad.

Angry.

And that scared me.

Because guilty people often get angry when they are cornered.

Daniel noticed too.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

My mother looked away.

“Nothing.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Mom.””

Her shoulders dropped.

For a moment, she looked old.

Tired.

Like she had been carrying something for years.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

His voice broke.

“But nobody tells me the truth.””

Claire reached for his hand.

He pulled away.

Not violently.

Just enough to show that he was hurt.

Then the front door opened again.

This time, nobody breathed.

Because the person standing there wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone from the past.

Someone who should have been gone forever.

A man with a scar above his eyebrow.

A man holding an old photograph.

Ethan.

Claire immediately stepped backward.

Daniel stared.

“You’re supposed to be dead.””

Ethan smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

Like someone who had been waiting for this exact moment.

“I was hoping you’d say that.””

He walked into the room.

Everyone froze.

Ethan placed the photograph on the table.

“Because now I can finally prove what Claire has been hiding.””

Daniel looked at the picture.

Then his face changed.

Because the photograph showed something impossible.

Something that meant every single person in that room had misunderstood the truth.

Ethan leaned closer and whispered:

“Daniel, Claire was never pretending to have your baby.””

He paused.

“And the child she was protecting was never yours.””

Nobody moved.

Then he added:

May you like

“She was protecting yours from me.””

Would you like Chapter 4 to reveal who the child really is, or expose what Daniel’s mother did three years ago?
