Chapter 13: The Memory They Stole

Daniel stared at the photograph.

His hands stopped shaking.

His breathing stopped.

Because the person in the picture was him.

Not a similar-looking man.

Not someone who happened to resemble him.

Him.

The photograph showed Daniel lying in a hospital bed.

His face bruised.

His eyes closed.

A small bandage across his forehead.

And beside him…

Was another person.

A baby wrapped in a white blanket.

Emma.

But that wasn’t the part that terrified him.

It was the date.

The date written on the corner of the photograph.

The same day everyone claimed Emma had died.

Daniel looked up slowly.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

His aunt lowered her eyes.

“I should have told you years ago.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You were there?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then explain.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Everyone knew he was close to breaking.

His aunt took a deep breath.

“The accident didn’t happen the way everyone believed.””

Claire held Emma close.

“What are you saying?””

His aunt looked at Ethan.

“I’m saying Ethan didn’t just try to take Emma.””

She looked at Daniel.

“He tried to erase both of you.””

The room became silent.

Ethan shook his head.

“You’re lying.””

But nobody believed him anymore.

Daniel looked at his aunt.

“Why?””

She opened the folder.

Inside were medical records.

Photos.

Documents.

Everything that had been hidden.

“Because three years ago, Daniel discovered the truth.””

Daniel frowned.

“I discovered?””

“Yes.””

She placed a paper on the table.

“You found out Ethan was planning to use Emma to control Claire.””

Claire looked down.

“I remember.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You remember everything?””

Claire nodded.

“Everything.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because after the accident, the doctors told me your memory might never return.””

Daniel looked away.

“And everyone decided for me.””

Nobody denied it.

His aunt continued.

“You woke up confused. You didn’t remember Claire. You didn’t remember Emma.””

She paused.

“But you remembered Ethan.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

“You were afraid of him.””

A chill moved through the room.

Daniel closed his eyes.

A memory flashed.

Ethan standing in a dark hallway.

A threatening voice.

A hand grabbing his shoulder.

Then darkness.

“I remember…”

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel touched his forehead.

“I remember being scared.””

Claire stepped closer.

“You told me something before the surgery.””

“What?””

She whispered:

“You said, ‘If I forget, don’t let him find her.’”

Daniel froze.

Those words felt familiar.

Like a message buried deep inside him.

He looked at Emma.

His daughter.

The child he had spent years searching for without knowing.

His aunt continued.

“After the accident, Ethan tried to convince everyone Daniel was unstable.””

Victor nodded slowly.

“He wanted control of everything.””

“The company,” his aunt said.

“The money.””

She looked at Ethan.

“And the evidence.””

Daniel turned.

“What evidence?””

Ethan said nothing.

That was the answer.

His aunt opened another document.

“This.””

Daniel took it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then widened.

It was a financial record.

Payments.

Transfers.

Names.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

Andrew.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“You worked with Andrew.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

Finally.

A crack.

A real one.

“He was supposed to handle everything.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared.

“You admit it?””

Ethan laughed.

“What difference does it make now?””

Claire looked disgusted.

“You ruined our lives.””

Ethan looked at her.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I saved myself.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You kidnapped a child.””

“I protected my future.””

“You destroyed families.””

“You think your family is innocent?””

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the one thing Ethan had always been good at.

Finding weaknesses.

Creating doubt.

Daniel looked at his mother.

She looked away.

He looked at Victor.

He lowered his head.

Everyone had failed.

Everyone had lied.

But one truth remained.

Ethan was the reason it happened.

Then Daniel noticed something.

Something strange.

He looked at the documents again.

A signature.

A signature he recognized.

Not Ethan’s.

Not Andrew’s.

Someone else’s.

Someone who had approved the hospital changes.

Daniel whispered:

“This isn’t possible.””

Claire looked at him.

“What?””

He pointed.

“This signature.””

His aunt stepped closer.

“What about it?””

Daniel stared.

Because he knew the handwriting.

He had seen it thousands of times.

The signature belonged to someone who had been helping them.

Someone everyone trusted.

Someone who had acted innocent.

His father.

Daniel looked toward the older man sitting silently across the room.

“Dad?””

Everyone turned.

His father’s face changed.

And that was when Daniel realized.

The final secret wasn’t hidden by strangers.

It was hidden by the people who raised him.

His father slowly stood.

“I was hoping you would never remember.””

Daniel felt the room tilt.

“Remember what?””

His father looked at Ethan.

Then at Claire.

Then finally at Daniel.

“The accident wasn’t the beginning.””

He paused.

“It was the ending.””

Daniel stared.

“Ending of what?””

His father’s voice was barely audible.

“The night before the crash…”

He swallowed.

“You were the one who found out the truth.””

Daniel waited.

“What truth?””

His father looked at Emma.

And said:

“You weren’t trying to save Claire.””

May you like

A pause.

“You were trying to expose me.””
