Chapter 12: The Last Lie Claire Kept

Daniel looked at Claire.

The room felt smaller.

Everyone knew.

Whatever came next would change everything again.

Claire looked at Emma.

Then at Daniel.

“I wanted to tell you.””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“But you didn’t.””

She looked down.

“No.””

“Why?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Because I was afraid you would hate me.””

Daniel stared.

“I already lost three years with my daughter.””

His voice cracked.

“What could possibly make me hate you more than that?””

Claire started crying.

“Because Emma wasn’t the only thing I lost.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel waited.

Claire took a deep breath.

“When the accident happened…”

She looked at Ethan.

“Ethan wasn’t the only person in that car.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Claire whispered:

“You were there.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“It isn’t.””

His memories came back in fragments.

Rain.

Headlights.

A scream.

A hand reaching for him.

Claire continued.

“You weren’t following me.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Then why was I there?””

Claire’s tears fell.

“Because I called you.””

Silence.

Daniel stared.

“Why?””

“Because I needed help.””

She looked at him.

“I found out Ethan was planning something.””

Daniel swallowed.

“What?””

“He wanted to take Emma away.””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“And I came?””

Claire nodded.

“You came for us.””

The room was silent.

“You tried to get us away from him.””

Daniel touched his head.

The pain came suddenly.

A memory.

A conversation.

Claire crying.

Daniel saying:

“I won’t let him hurt you.””

He closed his eyes.

“I said that.””

Claire whispered:

“Yes.””

The memories were returning.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Like broken pieces finding their place.

Daniel opened his eyes.

“Then what happened?””

Claire looked at Ethan.

“He crashed into us.””

Ethan shouted:

“That’s not true.””

Nobody looked at him.

Claire continued.

“After the accident, you were unconscious.””

She paused.

“And when you woke up…”

Daniel finished.

“I forgot.””

“Yes.””

Claire looked heartbroken.

“But not everything.””

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“You remembered one thing.””

“What?””

Claire looked at him.

“Me.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“You’re saying…”

“You didn’t remember my name.””

She smiled sadly.

“But you remembered that you trusted me.””

Daniel looked away.

All those years.

All those feelings.

Maybe they weren’t new.

Maybe they were echoes.

The reason he loved her so quickly.

The reason she felt familiar.

The reason he had always felt like something was missing.

Then Ethan laughed.

A bitter sound.

“You two are unbelievable.””

Everyone turned.

Ethan looked angry.

“You think this is a love story?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“No.””

He looked at him.

“It’s a story about the people you hurt.””

Ethan smiled.

“You still don’t know the final piece.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“What now?””

Ethan looked at Emma.

“The reason she survived.””

Claire immediately grabbed Emma.

“Don’t.””

Ethan ignored her.

“After the crash, someone saved her.””

Daniel looked at Laura.

“You?””

Laura shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked confused.

Ethan smiled.

“It was someone else.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who?””

Ethan looked toward the door.

Then said:

“The person who has been watching this entire time.””

The front door opened.

Nobody moved.

A woman stepped inside.

An older woman.

Someone Daniel recognized.

Someone who had been at the hospital.

Someone who had cried at Claire’s funeral.

Someone who everyone believed had no connection to any of this.

Daniel whispered:

“No…”

The woman looked at him.

“I’m sorry, Daniel.””

His face went pale.

Because the woman standing there was the person who had signed the paperwork that declared Emma dead.

The person who had helped bury the truth.

His own aunt.

She held a folder.

And inside that folder was the final piece of evidence.

The evidence that would reveal why Ethan, Victor, and everyone else had risked everything.

She looked at Emma.

Then said:

“Your daughter wasn’t the only person we saved that night.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

His aunt opened the folder.

And pulled out a photograph.

A photograph taken after the accident.

A photograph showing someone else alive.

Someone who was never supposed to survive.

She placed it on the table.

Daniel looked down.

Then his entire body went cold.

May you like

Because the person in the photograph…

Was him.
