Chapter 4: The Child Nobody Knew About

The room stayed frozen after Ethan’s words.

“She was protecting yours from me.””

For a few seconds, nobody even seemed to understand what he had said.

Daniel stared at him.

Then he laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because his mind couldn’t accept it.

“You’re lying.””

Ethan didn’t react.

“I expected you to say that.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You disappeared three years ago. You walk into my family’s house after ruining my marriage, and now you expect me to believe you’re telling the truth?””

Ethan reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.

“I didn’t come here for you to believe me.””

He placed it on the table.

“I came here because you deserve to know what happened.””

Claire looked terrified.

“Ethan, don’t.””

That was the first time Daniel looked at her instead of him.

“Don’t what?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Don’t destroy everything.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You think there’s anything left to destroy?””

The words hurt her.

I could see it.

But she nodded.

Because she knew she deserved them.

Ethan looked at Claire.

“You spent three years protecting him.””

Claire whispered, “I spent three years protecting everyone.””

“No,” Ethan said coldly.

“You spent three years carrying a secret that wasn’t yours alone.””

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A hospital bracelet.

And a document.

His fingers shook slightly as he read.

I watched his face change.

Confusion.

Shock.

Then disbelief.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Tell me.””

She couldn’t.

Her lips trembled.

“I was pregnant before I met you.””

The sentence landed like a bomb.

My mother covered her mouth.

My father looked away.

Sophie, who had been quietly holding onto my mother’s hand, looked confused.

Daniel stared at Claire.

“Pregnant?””

Claire nodded.

“With Ethan’s child.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

Then back at Claire.

“You knew?””

Claire wiped her face.

“I found out after I left him.””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Then why did you let me believe the baby was mine?””

Claire looked like she had been waiting for this question for years.

“Because I wanted it to be.””

That answer surprised everyone.

Even Daniel.

Claire stepped closer.

“When I met you, I was already broken.””

She swallowed.

“I had spent years being controlled, lied to, and afraid. Then you came along, and for the first time in my life, I felt safe.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Safe enough to lie?””

The pain in his voice was worse than anger.

Claire nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

A tear fell down her cheek.

“And I hate myself for that.””

Ethan crossed his arms.

“She didn’t just lie because she was scared.””

Claire looked at him sharply.

“Don’t.””

But Ethan continued.

“She lied because she knew if Daniel found out the truth, he would try to help.””

Daniel looked confused.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Ethan smiled bitterly.

“It does when you know what happened.””

He pointed at the hospital bracelet.

“That child was the reason Claire ran.””

Daniel looked down.

“What do you mean?””

Ethan’s expression darkened.

“Because I wasn’t just an abusive husband.””

The room went silent.

“I was also a man who would do anything to control what belonged to me.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“I left when I realized Ethan wasn’t going to let me keep my baby.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

Claire’s voice broke.

“He wanted custody.””

Ethan laughed.

“Not custody.””

His eyes became cold.

“Control.””

Nobody spoke.

Claire continued.

“He told me I was unstable. He told everyone I was sick. He tried to convince doctors that I couldn’t take care of my own child.””

Daniel looked at Ethan with disgust.

“And my mother knew?””

Ethan’s smile disappeared.

“Yes.””

Daniel turned toward his mother.

She looked away.

That was all the answer he needed.

“Mom.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. You were protecting a secret.””

My mother stood.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I spent years thinking Claire betrayed me.””

He looked around the room.

“But everyone here knew something.””

Nobody answered.

Claire reached into her purse.

“I have something else.””

Daniel looked at her.

Another secret.

Another piece of a life he thought he understood.

She pulled out a small folded paper.

“I never showed you because I was afraid.””

Daniel took it.

Opened it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Claire whispered:

“The DNA test.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked up.

“You tested?””

She nodded.

“Three years ago.””

His hands tightened around the paper.

“And?””

Claire looked at him.

“It was a match.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

The room blurred around him.

Because suddenly the impossible became possible.

The baby he thought was a lie…

Was actually connected to him.

But not the way he thought.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“How?””

Ethan’s smile disappeared.

Because he knew what was coming next.

Claire whispered:

“Because Ethan wasn’t the only person who lied.””

Daniel turned.

“Who else?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan looked toward my mother.

And said:

May you like

“Ask her why the baby’s DNA matches you.””

The entire room went silent.
