Chapter 8: The Girl In The Photograph
Nobody accused my mother.
Not immediately.
Because sometimes the truth is so shocking that your mind refuses to accept it.
My mother stood near the dining table, one hand pressed against her chest.
“That’s impossible.””
Nathan’s voice remained on speaker.
“No, it isn’t.””
My mother looked at Daniel.
“Your brother is trying to destroy us.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
The word surprised everyone.
Because he wasn’t defending her.
He was denying the possibility.
“No…”
He looked at Nathan.
“Tell me you’re wrong.””
Nathan was quiet.
“I wish I was.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
My father sat down slowly.
Like his legs could no longer hold him.
Claire looked at my mother.
“You knew.””
My mother looked at her.
“I helped you.””
Claire’s voice shook.
“You helped me escape Ethan.””
“Yes.””
“But you also knew where my baby went?””
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know at first.””
Daniel stared.
“At first?””
That was the moment everyone understood.
There was more.
My mother sat down.
“I thought she was gone.””
Claire whispered:
“She?””
My mother nodded.
“The baby was a girl.””
Claire grabbed the edge of the table.
“I had a daughter.””
The pain in her voice was unbearable.
Daniel reached for her.
This time, she let him.
Nathan spoke.
“Three years ago, after the accident, the hospital records were changed.””
Daniel looked up.
“Changed by who?””
Nathan answered:
“Someone with access.””
Everyone looked at Ethan.
But Nathan said:
“Not Ethan.””
That surprised us.
Daniel frowned.
“Then who?””
Nathan hesitated.
“Someone who wanted to hide the fact that the baby survived.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“I was scared.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“What did you do?””
She looked at him.
“I took her.””
Nobody moved.
The confession was quiet.
Almost too quiet.
But it destroyed everything.
Claire made a broken sound.
“You took my baby?””
My mother immediately shook her head.
“No.””
She started crying.
“No, Claire. I didn’t steal her.””
“Then what did you do?””
My mother looked at Daniel.
“I saved her.””
Daniel looked lost.
“How?””
My mother wiped her tears.
“After the accident, the doctors told us the baby needed immediate treatment.””
Claire whispered:
“I was unconscious.””
“Yes.””
My mother nodded.
“You were fighting for your life.””
She looked down.
“Ethan came to the hospital.””
Claire froze.
“He did?””
“Yes.””
My mother’s voice trembled.
“He told the doctors you were unstable. He told them he was the only legal parent.””
Daniel clenched his fists.
“He tried to take her.””
“Yes.””
My mother nodded.
“And I knew if I let him, Claire would never see her again.””
Claire covered her mouth.
“So you hid her.””
My mother looked at her.
“I hid her from him.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel whispered:
“Where?””
My mother didn’t answer.
That silence was terrifying.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Where is she?””
My mother looked toward the hallway.
Toward the staircase.
Then she said:
“Upstairs.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel stared.
“Upstairs?””
My mother nodded.
“She has been here.””
Claire’s face went completely pale.
“No.””
My mother cried.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
Claire’s voice broke.
“When was the right time?””
My mother couldn’t answer.
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
His voice shook.
“You’re telling me…”
He swallowed.
“That the child we’ve been looking for…”
My mother nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel slowly walked upstairs.
Nobody stopped him.
Nobody knew what to say.
Every step felt louder than the last.
Claire followed behind him.
Her hands were shaking.
When they reached the top, my mother opened a door.
Inside was a small bedroom.
Pink curtains.
Stuffed animals.
A nightlight shaped like a moon.
Daniel stopped.
Because on the wall were dozens of photographs.
A little girl laughing.
A little girl riding a bicycle.
A little girl blowing out birthday candles.
A little girl who looked strangely familiar.
Claire walked inside.
She touched one photograph.
Her fingers trembled.
“She has my eyes.””
Nobody spoke.
Then a small voice came from the hallway.
“Grandma?””
Everyone turned.
A little girl stood there holding a stuffed rabbit.
She looked at Claire.
Confused.
Scared.
The entire world seemed to stop.
Claire covered her mouth.
Because she knew.
A mother knows.
Even after three years.
Even after impossible circumstances.
She knew.
The little girl whispered:
“Who are you?””
Claire dropped to her knees.
Tears falling.
“My name is Claire.””
The girl tilted her head.
“My grandma said you were someone I would meet one day.””
Claire looked at my mother.
Then back at the child.
“What’s your name?””
The girl smiled softly.
“Emma.””
Daniel looked at Claire.
The same name written on the hospital bracelet.
The same name everyone thought belonged to a baby who never survived.
Emma took one step closer.
Then another.
But before Claire could touch her, a loud crash came from downstairs.
Everyone turned.
A second later, Ethan’s voice echoed through the house.
“You weren’t supposed to find her.””
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
May you like
Because Ethan wasn’t alone.
And the person standing beside him was someone none of us expected.
